“I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, even He who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

Hymn of the day:

“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” – LSB 357
This classic Advent hymn from the 12th century is based on the O Antiphons (antiphons for the Magnificat or Benedictus) which are used December 17-23); the text for these antiphons is on the same page as this hymn. The antiphons and this hymn are based on Scriptural descriptions of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the Emmanuel (God with us: Is. 7:14 and Matt. 1:23) Who saves His people held in sin’s bondage; freeing them by paying the Father’s ransom, Christ’s all-atoning death on the cross. Jesus is the Wisdom from on high Who has built His house, His Church (Prov. 9:1). Christ is the mighty I AM, the LORD God, Who appeared to Moses, rescued the people Israel, and gave him the Law (Ex. 3, 14 & 20). Our LORD is the Branch and Root of Jesse, born of the tribe of Judah, Who rescues His people from Satan and leads them unto heaven (Is. 11). The Christ for Whom Christians wait is the Key of David, the One Who opens the way to heaven for Christians and encases the fallen angels and unbelievers in hell. What He opens, no one can shut; what He closes, no one can open (Is. 22; Rev. 3). The Dayspring from on high is our Savior Who has visited His people and redeemed them (Luke 1:78), turning us from darkness to His glorious Light. Jesus Christ is King of the nations (Jer. 10) and King of Kings (Rev. 17 & 19), sitting on David’s throne (Is. 9), Who knits His people into one body, His Church (Col. 2). Rightly, then, all saints rejoice as they cry out (Rev. 22), “Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” – Rev. Thomas E. Lock (for Logia Online)
